Date: September 6th, 2006
Contact: Darius Shirzadi, Executive Director Providence, RI Reflecting the success it has achieved since its inception in 2002, Project GOAL Inc. was recently invited by the U.S. Soccer Foundation to participate in a gathering in Washington, D.C. of leading urban soccer programs from across the country. Project GOAL, along with City Kicks of Boston, Massachusetts, was one of only two programs representing the Northeast and New England asked to share the keys to the success of its program and advise the Foundation on how it can help support and grow urban soccer programs nationwide. Other programs from across the United States that participated included Starfinder Foundation, Soccer Community Partnerships of America, D.C. Scores, The Eddie Pope Foundation, United For D.C., Soccer In The Streets, City Kicks, Metropolitan Futbol Club, Atlanta Silverbacks Foundation, and US Youth Soccer. The Urban Soccer Programs Collaborative was initiated by the U.S. Soccer Foundation to create a forum for urban soccer programs to learn from each other and inform the national soccer community about how we can succeed in bringing soccer to youth in urban and economically disadvantaged communities. In addition, this ongoing partnership will inform the Foundation's grant making. Due in part to the feedback from Project Goal and other urban soccer programs, the Foundation's 2007 Grants will have an increased focus on projects that encourage inner city youth to participate in soccer and give them the means to do it. The Foundation begins accepting online applications for its 2007 Grants today at US Soccer Foundation.org Project GOAL, Inc., is an after-school initiative that partners with both the Central Falls and Providence School Departments.
