Date: January 10th, 2007
Contact: Darius Shirzadi, Executive Director Providence, RI Project GOAL, Inc.'s success with inner city youth has continues to excite the interest of the United States Soccer Foundation and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Project GOAL, Inc. has been invited to participate as part of a panel for the Urban Soccer Collaborative seminar, which is being sponsored and mediated by the US Soccer Foundation. The panel seminar will take place at the annual NSCAA convention taking place this year in the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indiana, from January 10-14, 2007. This highly interactive session will explore the unique challenges - and related solutions - associated with designing and implementing soccer programming for underserved youth, particularly in urban communities. The session will feature a brief panel presentation followed by a moderated discussion with session attendees. All interested parties are encouraged to attend, particularly those practitioners currently operating an urban soccer program or considering operating such a program. Participants will share, and assist in the collection of, lessons learned and best practices, and will help identify opportunities for ongoing collaboration among urban soccer program operators nationwide. The Urban Soccer Programs Collaborative was initiated by the U.S. Soccer Foundation to create a forum for urban soccer programs to learn from each other and inform the national soccer community about how we can succeed in bringing soccer to youth in urban and economically disadvantaged communities. In addition, this ongoing partnership will inform the Foundation's grant making. Due in part to the feedback from Project GOAL and other urban soccer programs, the Foundation's 2007 Grants will have an increased focus on projects that encourage inner city youth to participate in soccer and give them the means to do it. Project GOAL, Inc., is an after-school initiative that partners with both the Central Falls and Providence School Departments. Its mission is to facilitate the development of New England's disadvantaged inner city youth through after-school tutoring, health education, and soccer-related programs. Project GOAL, Inc., is a non-profit 501 © 3 organization comprised of professionals from the business, academic, health, and soccer communities who support the project in achieving its objectives in creating opportunities for its "GOALie" participants.
